Race of Remembrance May 28th in Parkersburg

We saw the destruction and devastation in Parkersburg after the EF5 tornado hit in May 2008.

But the town of Parkersburg wasn't down for long, and that's what the "Race of Remembrance" celebrates.

TheThird Annual Race is set for Saturday, May 28th in Parkersburg.

The first year it was just the EF5K walk/run.

But then Coach Ed Thomas was killed.

"He was a great man. Elder at my church. Track coach as well as football coach. So I approached Jan Thomas and asked if we could include an Ed Thomas 10K with the EF5K and those proceeds go to benefit the Ed Thomas Foundation," said race organizer Brad Zinnecker.

Proceeds from the EF5K this year benefit a new expansion project at the Parkersburg library.

"A great way to support the community. That's really what the races are for are support and give back to the community. But also to recognize all the work that's been done," said Zinnecker.

Zinnecker said last year about 400 people participated.

The cost of the race is $15 if you register by May 12th or $20 after that.

Registration will be accepted until the start of the race on May 28th.

Zinnecker said Parkersburg has been strengthened through its tough times, and the Race of Remembrance is a good way to honor and celebrate that strength.

Again, the 5 and 10 K races are Saturday May 28th with a start and finish at the Aplington-Parkersburg high school track.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m.

The free kids fun run is at 8 a.m. and the races begin at 8:30 a.m.
