Old Capitol reopened five years ago - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Old Capitol reopened five years ago

The Old Capitol Building reopened to the public May 6, 2006.  The building had been damaged by a fire in 2001.  The Old Capitol was being renovated when a construction worker's torch ignited the dome.

Every room was restored and redecorated.  Many now match what the building looked like when it opened in 1842. Since the 2001 fire, more than $9 million had been spent on renovations.

Iowa City served as the state capitol from 1846 to 1857 before moving to Des Moines.
