"Police of the river" arrested for assault in Iowa City

A man who claimed to be "police of the river" was arrested Wednesday after Iowa City Police say he assaulted a man who was fishing.

Officers were called to the bank of the Iowa River near the 10 block of Highway 6 East at around 7:48 p.m. Thursday for a reported assault.

The victim told police that a man approached him while he was fishing and asked if he had a license.  The victim said he did and asked the man if he was with the police.  The man said he was, "police of the river."

Police say the man then jabbed his finger into the victim's chest and grabbed his shirt and then pulled him up the bank to the bike path.

Police say someone biking by told the man to let go of the victim.  Police say the defendant then walked away.

Police arrested Christopher William Stark, Jr., 45.  Police say he is a transient.

Stark is charged with assault.
