New Hartford post office may face closure

A meeting in New Hartford about the fate of the town's post office ended in controversy Wednesday evening.

Representatives from the U.S. Postal Service held a public meeting in the New Hartford middle school to discuss the process they are going through to decide on whether or not to close the facility.

Representatives said they will be looking at income to the post office as well as traffic flow and the number of open job spots within the facility over the next six to nine months.

By the end of that period, the Postal Service will compile gathered statistics and send them to Washington D.C. where the fate of the New Hartford office will be decided.

At one point in Wednesday night's meeting, Representative Pat Grassley read a letter from his grandfather Senator Chuck Grassley opposing the closing of the post office. The representatives then refused to take anymore questions and abruptly left the meeting.

If the post office is ultimately closed, all services currently offered will still be available, but residents will have different means of carrying those services out.
