Marengo man charged with threat of terrorism insists it was only a joke

Police took Marengo man Boubker Lamkadmi  into custody at the Amana Refrigeration Appliances Factory in Middle Amana Tuesday night, after co-workers heard him threaten to 'blow up Amana.'

Now Lamkadmi says he was only kidding and misunderstood.

Lamkadmi made his initial appearance in Iowa County court Wednesday morning, where he told a judge it was all a joke.  Lamkadmi has been charged with making a "Threat of Terrorism," a Class D felony.  He is being held in the Iowa County jail on $20,000 cash bond.

One co-worker, who asked to remain anonymous, says Tuesday night he and other employees were pulled aside by their foreman and told a threat had been made, but they were told the situation was under control and it was safe to go back to work.

Many in the small town of Middle Amana were shocked to learn of the incident.

"It's very scary, something you don't think would happen here in Amana," one resident said.

Investigators now believe that Lamkadmi may have indeed been joking.  They say there appears to be no credible threat to the town and that it doesn't appear that he had the ability to carry out the alleged threats.

Still the FBI has been called in to investigate to make sure.

Jesse Bersler lives just two apartments down from Lamkadmi in Marengo.  He says the two had minimal contact in the few months Lamkadmi had been living there.

"He came over a few times wanting to be friends and stuff, wanted to be friendly I guess."

Bersler says Lamkadmi moved to Marengo to be closer to work, he said he generally kept to himself.

Whether credible or not, the comments have gotten the attention of many.

"Make comments like that and you're bound to lose your job, anybody would," Bersler said.
