LOST Vote fails in Linn County metro area

A proposal to extend Linn County's 1 percent sales tax for 20 percent appeared to be narrowly failing.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, the sales tax extension trailed by 216 votes with nearly 32,000 ballots cast.

Cedar Rapids hoped to use half the proceeds to build a flood production system on both sides of the Cedar River. Forty percent would be used for street improvements and 10 percent for property tax relief.

Opponents say the measure gives the city too much flexibility for spending the money.

The city currently receives about $20 million a year from the tax.

If approved, the city planned to sell bonds and pay off the debt with sales tax revenue.
