April tornado outbreak shattered record set in 1974

Preliminary estimates show there were more tornados in a single day last week than any other day in recorded history.

Government analysts say there were 312 tornados during last week's outbreak, including a record-setting 226 during the 24-hour period starting at 8:00 a.m. April 27.

Officials say that far exceeds the previous 24-hour record of 148 tornados, set in 1974. 

In the month of April, preliminary numbers show that 871 tornadoes touched down in the United States.  In April 2010, 139 tornadoes touched down in the U.S.  In April 2009, 226 tornadoes touched down.  In April 2008, 189 tornadoes touched down.

In April 2011, 346 people died from tornadoes.  The number of deaths in 2010 was 11, 6 in 2009 and there were no tornado deaths in April 2008.
