Dubuque City Council approves purchase of properties

In Dubuque, the green light is given to City Manager Mike Van Milligan on the purchase of three properties. It's a continuation of the Bee Branch Project which started after a flood in May 1999. City leaders decided to invest in an engineering study that analyzed drainage.

The study was completed in 2001 and an action plan put into place. It's a water basin project that will help manage water flow, especially after heavy rain.

The city already acquired dozens of properties and began construction fall of 2010. Monday the council approved the purchase of 507 Garfield Avenue. Continental Baking Property. City leaders want to look at an alternate building for the bakery.

They also approved negotiations for two other properties for the project. One on the 15 hundred block of Maple Street and the other at 15th Street and Cedar Street.

The city hopes to acquire them to allow for more space. The entire Bee Branch Project is expected to be completed by spring of 2013.
