The Washington County Sheriff's Office has arrested 70-year-old Thomas Lee Hansen of Riverside and charged him with first degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Sharon Kay Gerot.

Washington County Dispatch received a call just before 4 p.m. on Sunday that someone had been shot at 1355 Deer Run Drive in Riverside. A criminal complaint says Gerot was riding a lawn mower in their backyard when she was allegedly shot.  Gerot was found lying outside the home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hansen is being held in the Washington County Jail. He made an initial appearance at 11 a.m. Monday. A preliminary hearing has not been set, but a judge appointed public defender John Robertson of Iowa City to represent him.

An autopsy will be conducted by the State Medical Examiner.
