KWWL honors the "Best of the Class"

Sunday, KWWL hosted is 27th annual "Best of the Class" ceremony, honoring valedictorians or top graduating seniors from more than 100 eastern Iowa high schools.  And one family had more than one reason to celebrate the occasion.

"Congratulations to the best of class 2011!"  KWWL anchor Tara Thomas said.

The group of students honored represent the best and brightest of eastern Iowa high schools.  About half of the 119 students joined KWWL at Wartburg College to be recognized for their academic excellence.  For many of them, finishing at the head of their high school class is a dream come true.

"I've always liked being the best.  So I don't know... I didn't really know I was at the top until my junior year.  And after that I said, 'Ok, yeah.  I need to be a stickler and just keep going, go hard and get that top,'" said Kathleen Bohr, Best of the Class senior from Crestwood High School.

And Bohr is glad to be sharing her honor with her cousin, also a Best of the Class honoree.

"We've always kind of been really close, but didn't know we'd be sharing this too.  So it's exciting," said Lindsey Bohr of Decorah High School.

Their grandmother is thrilled to see Lindsey and Kathleen reach this milestone, and she looks forward to seeing what they'll accomplish in the future.

"Oh I just hope the best for them whatever they decide," said their grandmother, Evelyn Bohr.

And like all of the graduates honored, the Bohrs are glad to see their hard work pay off, in landing them as the "Best of the Class."

Lindsey Bohr plans to attend Luther College in Decorah to study biology, while her cousin Kathleen will attend Iowa State, possibly majoring in the medical field.

And you'll be seeing all of the 2011 "Best of the Class" students during KWWL newscasts beginning next week.
