Fire breaks out in Iowa City apartment


A smoke detector is being credited for alerting residents of an Iowa City apartment building early Sunday morning.

Crews were called to 434 S. Johnson Street at 3:17 a.m. Sunday.  When they arrived, the porch and the front door of the building were on fire.

A resident of the building was alerted by a smoke detector and all of the residents were evacuated before the fire department got there.  No one was injured.

Crews had the fire under control within 20 minutes and the fire was completely out within 40 minutes.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the damage is estimated at $75,000.00.
