Skype allows soldier to see his prom date

A very special evening with an added surprise for a local teenager at her high school prom.

It was an emotional Saturday night for Vinton-Shellsburg High School senior Kosette Brown.  Her boyfriend, Sgt. Brendan Fank, is thousands of miles away serving with the Iowa National Guard in Afghanistan but thanks to Skype and the pair's parents, she received a great surprise.

Saturday night, dads Ken Brown and John Fank suited up for prom.  They wanted to give their little girl, Kosy, a night she'd remember.  The two knew Kosy didn't want to go to prom without Brendan, but they convinced her to get dressed up and go with a "mystery" date.

Amazingly, both families and Brendan kept the secret... right up until a few moments before the Grand March.  Ken and John surprised her in the hallway -- both wearing black suits and purple corsages.  Her reaction was, of course, surprise.  But she was still confused why KWWL's cameras were following her around.

What Kosy didn't realize is, a few feet away, her principal Kirk Johnson was hooking a computer up to Skype.  They'd done a few test runs the week before and now had Brendan waiting online to give Kosy a second surprise.

Finally, they introduce her at the Grand March.  She's led out by her dad and Brendan's dad, and sees her boyfriend's face on a giant screen.  Kosy is able to tell Brendan she loves him.  He tells her, she looks beautiful.  And that's how, thousands of miles apart, Kosette Brown and Brendan Fank spent their prom night together.
