Area athletes hit high at Drake Relays

James Harrington has etched his name alongside the Drake Relays' elite athletes.

The Cedar Falls Junior anchored the Tigers 4 x 100 team to victory to capture his fourth title of 2011.  The Tiger team consisting of Harrington, Luke Toyosi, Barkley Hill, and Marshall Hill, blazed the blue oval in 42.23 seconds.

"I knew that we had a chance of doing some big things at Drake," said Harrington. "We have a lot of talent, and it's shown this weekend."

Waverly-Shell Rock, the defending champs in the boys' shuttle hurdle relay, fell behind, but made up time with a smooth anchor leg from Eric Larson.  The team consisting of Jackson Litterer, Cole Chesnut, Blake Willson, and Larson finished with the second best time in the event's young history at 56.63 seconds.

"It's something we weren't quite expecting," said Litterer. "We were just going out just to do our best.  We didn't know how much faster we could get, but we just ran hard, ran our race, had fun, stayed loose, and came home with a Drake title."

In the high school girls 4 x 800, Iowa City High came out of no where and the team of Meg Richardson, Lori Lines, Ellen Carman, and Rebecca Rethwisch were emotional after winning their first ever Drake title.

"Last night, I guess I was sleep talking saying ‘I really want to win, I really want this,'" said Rethwisch, "but I really wanted this for a long time."
