Cedar Rapids firms push for sales tax extension

Several well-known private employers in Cedar Rapids are helping bankroll a campaign to convince voters to extend the city's 1% local-option sales tax for 20 years. The money would be used to protect against future floods and fix city streets.

The Protect Cedar Rapids Committee reports it has raised $450,000 in contributions from corporations and individuals. That money will be used to try and sway voters with advertising and forums to talk about the extension.

Residents will vote on Tuesday to decide the issue.

Penford Products Co. contributed $50,000 while United Fire Group, Alliant Energy and the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce each gave $20,000. Other companies like Rockwell Collins and St. Luke's Hospital gave $10,000 or more.
