Iowa City council to discuss future of downtown

The Iowa City City Council will discuss the future of downtown development next week after last year's passage of the 21-only ordinance has made the area much less attractive to bar owners.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that city planners have told the council they are looking to forge a new direction for downtown in light of the ordinance.

Among their objectives is to increase the amount of office space and non-student residential development downtown and enhance the area as an arts and entertainment destination.

Council members are expected to give city staff guidance during a work session on Monday about how to proceed with updating the city's comprehensive plan. A number of concerns, from how to provide adequate parking and better accommodate bicycle traffic, will be up for discussion.
