Will new convention complex hurt Hawkeye Downs?

There's a lot of anticipation about the new convention center that will be located in downtown Cedar Rapids. It will be the second largest in the state of Iowa.  Officials at Hawkeye Downs Speedway welcome the competition.

The variety of sites and sounds at the job site catch Hawkeye Downs General Manager Roy Nowers by surprise everyday.

The maintain they have a wide variety of entertainment and racing everyone in eastern Iowa.

"I'll drive into the parking lot and I'll be like, why is all this here?  Oh! we're doing the auction. You try to work into the future but sometimes you forget today!"  said Nowers.

the reality, Nowers says, is that Iowans are cutting back.  He calls it a challenge to keep the prices low at his family-friendly venue.

"You try to stay obviously competitive with everybody else. For our races, kids under 12 get in free. We haven't charged kids in a couple of years. We try to keep all of our concession prices as low as we can," said Nowers.

Jennifer Pickar is the Director of Communications and Marketing at the Cedar Rapids Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.   A sign in the window there highlights the events complex coming in 2013.   The bureau gladly hands out entertainment information and amenities for visitors and residents of all income levels.

"Hawkeye Downs is a great example of a facility that is used for multiple purposes. Whether it be a night the family goes out to see a race or you're there for an exhibit show. That's the kind of venue that we love to have here," said Pickar

Roy Nowers agrees.

"There's always going to be a need for a facility like this in Cedar Rapids. I think Hawkeye Downs will will last hopefully another 100 years,"

Even if the restructuring and rebuilding of Cedar rapids causes a few bumps along the way.
