Governor Branstad has signed a bill into law that makes impersonating a decorated military veteran a criminal offense.

Senate file 397 says that a person who impersonates a decorated military veteran with the intent to deceive another person for the purpose of gaining any real or anticipated monetary gain commits a serious misdemeanor.

For the purposes of the bill, a decorated military veteran  means a veteran of the armed forces of the United States who has been awarded any decoration or medal authorized by the United States Congress for service in the armed forces of the United States, any of the service medals or badges awarded to the members of such forces, or the ribbon, button, or rosette of any such badge, decoration, or medal.
