Earlville losing US Post Office

The city of Earlville is losing its post office Thursday. Cluster boxes are now set up to take the place of post office boxes.

People in Earlville received a letter from the United States Postal Service dated April 18. It cited failed negotiation attempts between the US Post Office and the landlord.

Landlord Chris Mahley said he'd like to keep the USPS tenant in his Earlville building.

He said he hopes "the Postal Service will want the built-to-Postal-Service-specifications present space. I will continue to try and talk with them towards an agreement."

Earlville mayor Dan Wheeler said this is an inconvenience for the people of his city.

"The timing on it was, you know, they came in and it was 'bang, bang' and done deal and gone," Wheeler said. "They sent letters out on Tuesday. Wednesday we had a meeting and a week later, on Thursday: last day, so, you know, it's a shock and it's fast."

Folks in Earlville will now have to take their packages to nearby Dyersville, Delhi or Manchester post offices.
