Burglary suspect jumps into Cedar River

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo police say a man jumped into the Cedar River after running from officers on Tuesday night.

Police arrested 31-year-old Richard Neil Eastman and charged him with burglary in the first degree, possession of burglary tools, drug possession and interference.

It all started after a reported assault in the 1000 block of Lafayette Street around 8 p.m. Police were told the suspect had stolen several items and was running from the scene.

Officers found Eastman at East 10th Street and Sycamore Street. They say he dropped what he was carrying, ran towards the river and jumped in. Officers watched him as he moved downstream. Police say he swam over to the edge near the 18th Street bridge and was assisted by the Waterloo Fire Department getting out of the water.

Eastman was treated at Allen Hospital for hypothermia. He is currently in the Black Hawk County Jail on a no bond warrant.
