Iowa dad honors son killed in drunk driving crash

Russ Reineke, who resides in Carroll Iowa, made his final presentation after ten years of visiting hundreds of high schools throughout Iowa warning people about the dangers of drinking and driving.

"He was a great man.  He was 24 years old.  I loved him." said Reineke.

Russ Reineke's 24-year-old son, Dale Reineke, and 21-year-old friend Kristi Nielsen from Carroll were killed, and his son's fiancée and another friend were seriously injured
in a November 24, 2001 collision near Jefferson, Iowa.

A vehicle occupied by two 16-year-old girls from Odebolt, Iowa, struck their van after they had been drinking the night before the early morning collision and were killed instantly.

"It happened at 6:20 in the morning." said Reineke.

The public was invited to any of the three presentations on Tuesday and the
Concert Hall at College Community in Cedar Rapids.

"This should never happen once in our country.  This is something that can totally be stopped just by people taking personal responsibility."  said Reineke.

To reinforce his message, Reineke brought along the crumpled vehicles involved in the deadly collision which he purchased from a salvage yard and mounted them on a trailer.
He also brings enlarged portraits of the victims of the collision, as well as pictures of the hospitalized survivors.

The vehicles will be on display at the High School until the conclusion of post prom this weekend.
