Support of Dubuque state recreation area wins award

The organization that helps support the Mines of Spain, a state recreation area in Dubuque, received an award April 16. The National Association for Interpretation awarded the group - Friends of the Mines of Spain - Excellence in Interpretive Support for Region 5.

The Friends of the Mines of Spain raised $1.8 million in donations and grants in order to expand and renovate the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center.

The National Association for Interpretation said this award, "is presented to an individual member or nonmember, governing body, official, administrator, business, agency, or organization that has shown recognition of the value of interpretation through exceptional and sustained support."

Region 5 is made up of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Canada's province of Manitoba and territory of Nunavut.

Friends of the Mines of Spain received the award April 16 at the annual regional workshop in Manitoba.
