Meeting discusses future of Iowa City post office

About 30 people attended a meeting in Iowa City Wednesday afternoon to discuss the future of the USPS location on Washington Street.

The United States Postal Service is recommending closing the office, and consolidating the branch with the main post office, which is located just a quarter of a mile away.

Joni Schrup, who owns an eyewear boutique in the area, attended the meeting.

She says three representatives from the USPS were in attendance to answer questions about what will happen next. In a three to six month study, the post office will review revenue, mail volume, and impact on the community whether to close the Washington Street location.

People who use the post office can also fill out surveys for the study. Petitions will also be considered.

Schrup says some area business owners are concerned with the possible move, specifically naming one jewelry store owner who mails four to five packages each day.  By walking four additional blocks, the trip to the post office can be much more hazardous for anyone carrying the expensive merchandise.
