People in Evansdale lobby to keep post office open

Hundreds of people turned out Monday night to a meeting in Evansdale to try and keep their post office open. Opponents packed the Amvets Hall in Evansdale to tell postal officials they're angry their post office is on the list of closures. They say closing the post office would hurt the business climate, cause inconvenience for city residents and post office box holders, and wouldn't save the postal service any money. It also became something of a referendum on the operation of the Waterloo Post Office. That would be the next closest post office.

"There are things that maybe somebody local that's a little more in tune with our local economy should maybe be doing and actually making sure the surveys and stuff actually went out and researching the community a little bit because we are a growing community and I'm proud to say we had the largest growth rate in Black Hawk County," Evansdale mayor Chad Deutsch told the group.

"The Postal Service is trying to reduce our footprint so a lot of it is geography, location, and other alternatives and one of the biggest things is to make sure noone's service is compromised and make sure we continue to provide exceptional service," said Sharon Parkison of the U.S.P.S.

People were also upset that much smaller, surrounding cities would keep their post office simply because they have a postmaster. Any decision from the postal service is still a long way away.
