DNR investigates fish kill in Winneshiek Co. stream

Manure flowing into a Winneshiek County stream has resulted in a fish kill. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating the kill at a small feeder stream that runs to the Turkey River southeast of Calmar Monday.

Officials say horizontal stop logs on a manure storage structure at a dairy failed Sunday. The owner, Gary Elsberend of Calmar, tried to stop the manure from going into the stream, but says heavy snowfall last week, runoff from snow melt, and the proximity of the storage area to the stream kept him from preventing the spread.

The DNR fisheries staff is at the scene conducting a fish kill evaluation. Early reports indicate the fish kill extended about three miles to where the stream enters the Turkey River. Minnows and chubs were affected, but no dead game fish have been found.

The DNR will continue to monitor the situation and consider enforcement action.
