Officials warn caution on I-80

For the thousands of truck drivers  that pass through Interstate 80 in Iowa City every day, there's not a lot of room for error.

"It is a little bit dangerous I think because it's windy.  Now it's fine, but sometimes it just gets you off the road," said one truck driveR we spoke with.

Construction crews, who are widening the Interstate to six lanes,  have shifted the traffic flow near Iowa City.

The right lane going westbound is located where the shoulder used to be and next to that is a steep drop off.

"They go past that very edge shoulder line, and they're going in the ditch," said Sgt. Denise Brotherton with the Iowa City Police Department.

One semi crossed over the fog line earlier in the week and fell into the ditch.  According to the Department of Transportation website, Interstate 80 was closed Saturday night at the Dodge Street exit while crews removed the disabled semi.

Police say in the last two weeks, they've had a handful of trucks on this stretch of highway that have fallen off the road.

"It's hard to get the word out because [we're talking about] Interstate 80, so you've got people from all over the country going through there," Brotherton said.

Police are urging local drivers to use caution in this area, and to give trucks plenty of room.

Construction is expected on this seven mile stretch to go into November.
