FDA cracks down on hand sanitizer claims

The FDA is warning against false claims, that some hand sanitizers can actually prevent MRSA infections.

Several companies were sent warning letters to take these claims off their labels, because the products did not get FDA review or approval.

In fact, the FDA says no antiseptic products have been confirmed to protect against MRSA, E-coli, H1N1, flu or salmonella.

The agency cautions that any such claims are misleading, and urges consumers to consult a pharmacist or health care provider with any questions.

The FDA has given companies 15 days to correct any label violations or risk legal action.
