Mercy breaks ground on Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids

Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids broke ground on their state-of-the-art cancer facility Thursday afternoon.

Survivors, medical staff and members of the community gathered in tent that sat right where Iowa's largest cancer center be located in the spring of 2012.

The Hall-Perrine Center will house radiation and oncology services, patient rooms, suites and, a library.

"Clearly, this will become a destination service for the medical district, which is the attention of the medical district. It's designed to draw the larger Eastern Iowa community to Cedar Rapids for their health care." said Tim Charles, President and CEO of Mercy Medical Center.

A meditation center and garden will become the largest green-space in the city.

The estimated construction cost is about $25 million.
