2 audits missed alleged crime at Drake

The president of Drake University says two university audits didn't catch a pattern of the alleged theft of $470,000 from the university.

President David Maxwell said during a faculty meeting that small sums had been taken from a petty cash fund "on a fairly regular basis" since 2004.  Police say former university employee Robert Harlan has been cooperating with an investigation and is expected to surrender on Thursday.

The 49-year-old faces five counts of theft. He worked at Drake for 20 years, the last 10 as director of student accounts.
