Soldiers paid respects to one of their own who was killed by an improvised explosive device last week in Afghanistan.

Spc. Donald Nichols of Shell Rock was killed April 13, in Laghman Province while serving with the 1-133rd.

A memorial to Nichols was set up Monday at the headquarters at Forward Operating Base Mehtar Lam.  A photo of the memorial taken by Spc. James Wilton shows Nichols' Donald Duck keychain to the right of his boots.  Nichols' platoon mates said he carried it with him everywhere.

Visitation for SPC Don Nichols will be Friday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly.  The funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Waverly-Shell Rock High School gym.
