Two eastern Iowa fighters heading to National Golden Gloves

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

More than two weeks removed from his Iowa State Golden Gloves Championship and Greg Sykes of Waterloo is still flashing his title belt. Sykes and Kevin Cruz have very little time to enjoy their state titles, because the National Championships are just a few training sessions away.

In all probability, 28-year-old Greg Sykes will be fighting his last amateur bouts in Indianapolis. Sykes who moved up to Light Heavyweight brings speed and savvy to the ring and he believes there is a great opportunity for him to do well at Nationals.

"My boxing ability is good, I've got a good jab, I've got good ring movement, great defense. I've got a lot of plusses. I can't really think of too many negatives. My coaches get on me because I'm not a real aggressive fighter, but I'm more of a boxer. I think in the ring, pick out my opponent's weaknesses and capitalize on my strengths," Sykes said.

20-year-old Kevin Cruz has only been fighting 4 years, but he has made a rapid rise up the amateur ranks.

"He's got such natural hand speed. Right away he got in the open division and handled it very well," Cedar Valley Boxing Club coach Greg Boyer said.

"My dad got me into it to stay out of trouble. I stayed with it, stuck with it and it got me really good in life got me really far," Cruz said.  "I think it's just all heart. I have a really good heart for the sport. I don't give up much. I actually don't give up. I just keep going forward".

Golden Gloves competition begins Sunday.
