A Matter of Balance: helping older adults stand upright

"If you don't break anything you're lucky," said Olga Chyle Jung. "Once you fall it's something you will always remember."

This is Jung's second time taking the Matter of Balance class. She says she's gaining more confidence with every step.

"I have realized the props I have like the double railings going to the basement and the railing in the bathroom and the safe thing I wear around my neck, those have all been comforting," said Jung.

Instructor Kristin Iehl says for some, the fear of falling forces them to not live out their daily lives.

"It's changing that fear from it's a huge curb and I need to step off of it to I can do that I just need to be assertive and get the help I need," Iehl said.

The class starts with a discussion and then moves to exercises that can be used in the comfort of their own home.

"Most of them are just based on leg strengthening and circulation and balance stuff so it helps people be more confident in the community and see their friends," said Iehl. "You would be surprised at the things that are hindrances. Just not having a handrail will stop people from seeing their friend at all."

Thanks to a grant from the Wellmark Foundation and Black Hawk County Health Department this class is offered with no charge.

"This class is just for the kind of people who have it hard to get out, but once you get out it's worth every effort," said Jung.

A Matter of Balance class meets twice a week for four weeks.
