For the first time in decades, new way of diagnosing Alzheimer's

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

For the first time in decades, scientists have released new guidelines for diagnosing and treating Alzheimer's disease.

The revisions from the national institute on aging reflect how far Alzheimer's research has come over the past 25 years.

The updated guidelines now describe the very earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease. Instead of only the later stages, when dementia is already present.

They also discuss the use of brain imaging, and biomarkers in the blood and spinal fluid that help track the progression of the disease.

Researchers say the new guidelines are designed to help doctors diagnose Alzheimer's disease earlier.
