Iowa's big boys eye the season opener

The season may still be four and a half months away, but the Iowa football team still has their sight set on a return to the top of the Big Ten.  A lot of what happens this fall may depend on the offensive line which should be the Hawks' strong suit this season.

Iowa returns 5 players with starting experience on that unit, including James Ferentz, Marcus Zusevics, and Riley Riff.  All 3 started every game last season.

Despite that experience, they still say they're not yet where they need to be.

"I thought we made some great progress, we've grown closer," said center James Ferentz, "We've improved our fundamentals, but at the same time there's still a lot of work to be done.  We've got a long ways to go until that first week in September when we've got to be ready to hit the field running."

"I think we'll be fine, but we're not there yet by any stretch and all those guys," added head coach Kirk Ferentz, "They're all capable of getting better.  If we're going to have a good football team we're going to need that to happen."

Iowa opens the season against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 3.
