Sixteen new trees planted in downtown Cedar Rapids

Downtown Cedar Rapids looks a bit greener after volunteers planted sixteen new trees on Wednesday.

This project was made possible by a sponsorship from ITC Midwest . A ceremonial tree planting was held near Greene Square Park on 3rd Avenue between the railroad tracks and 5th Street.

Vanessa Rogers helped organize the event.  "Our downtown streetscape means a lot because people are now that the weather is nice out on the street, sitting at some of our sidewalk cafes, enjoying some time in the park on a bench, and it really helps to have beautiful, fresh new trees." said Rogers.

The Cedar Rapids Downtown District has worked since 2009 to identify and replace trees impacted by the 2008 flood and the Emerald Ash Borer. They say additional tree sponsorship opportunities are available.
