More than a dozen people are displaced from their homes, after a fire tore through a Coralville apartment complex Monday afternoon.

The apartment is near Coral Ridge Mall,  at 969 Boston Way.

Coralville Fire Chief Dave Stannard says his department got a call around 5:30 of a small shed on fire.

The flames spread from that small shed and to the four apartments nearby.  It quickly shot up through the building's second floor and roof.

Chief Stannard says time and weather conditions were against firefighters.

"We were fighting the wind for the most part, and it got a pretty good start on us. The east side, it obviously did some damage to the building across the way there, it was hot enough to melt the building 50 feet away," said Chief Stannard.

Stannard says everyone in the building managed to get out safely, but one firefighter twisted an ankle on the scene.

The Red cross is assisting five adults and 10 minors who lived in the four unit apartment with shelter, food, and clothing.

Stannard told us it may be a challenge to find where the fire started, because the wind made it spread so quickly.
