Disaster declared for Pocahontas County after tornado

Governor Branstad has declared a disaster emergency for Pocahontas County in the wake of the tornado that hit Varina Saturday night.

It's one of several tornados to hit Iowa over the weekend.

The governor was set to visit the town of Mapleton on Sunday but his trip was delayed by fog.

The governor was scheduled to visit around 11:00 Sunday morning but fog forced his helicopter to land in Fort Dodge.

The governor then flew to Sioux City and drove to Mapleton.

The twister touched down near Mapleton Saturday evening.

Several homes and businesses were damaged, but no major injuries were reported.

A National Weather Service team says the EF3 tornado left a path of destruction three and a half miles long.

They also say the tornado measured three-quarters of a mile wide at one point.

The National Weather Service has confirmed four more tornadoes touched down in Sac County as well.

Many other communities saw golf ball to baseball-sized hail.
