Coralville salon revs up cancer patient spirit

The side affects of cancer treatments take a toll on the mind and body. But a business in Coralville believes that relaxation is the key to revving up the survival spirit.

Tracy Lacina opened Skin Deep after her own battle with cancer.

Lacina doesn't claim to have the cure, but she can improve a patient's state of mind.

"Seeing the patient leave if I can do that for someone going through chemo, that makes me feel good that's what I want to do." said Lacina.

Jody Meyer was diagnosed with breast cancer in December and stops by for skin treatments after chemotherapy.

"From shaving my head to the wigs, to Tracy and my spa time, its just been a great experience for me."  said Meyer.

The costs of treatments at the salon vary depending on the service. Most cancer patients enjoy the fact that Skin Deep is located right off the interstate so they can schedule times before or after their treatments at various medical centers.

Doctors at the University of Iowa recommend finding a skin care professional who's studied oncology aesthetics, like Tracy.  Exposure to certain chemicals can be dangerous for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
