Importance of having a weather radio alarm at home

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Weather radios are an important part of being alerted to severe weather while in your home.  People should not rely on city sirens, because those are intended to alert people who are outdoors when severe weather threatens.

Weather radios will go off no matter if the actual electricity is off or not cause that actually happens sometimes in storms.  Storm Track 7 Meteorologist Jennifer Hildreth would recommend everyone have one either in your camper if you go camping, or in your house next to you in bed.

"It will wake you up so you have plenty of time to get to the basement," Hildreth said.

Those alerts are put out by Weather Radio Service.  They go off for watches and warnings and you can program them for your county.

Once you know there's a warning, turn on your television or log onto KWWL.com for more detailed information about the alert.
