Caldwell steps down as Go-Hawk Wrestling Coach

The powerful Waverly-Shell Rock wrestling program is looking for a new head coach.

Rick Caldwell who led the powerful Go-Hawk program to four consecutive state tournament titles and three straight team duals championships is stepping down.

The announcement of Caldwell's resignation was made at Monday night's school board meeting.

Caldwell says he'll remain in Waverly where he is also an at risk teacher in the school district.

But as for leaving the wrestling program, Caldwell says it was the right time.

"I don't know if you can say that I'm able to go out on my own terms, but going out on top feels pretty good, winning a state title, and this group of seniors won 7 of 8 state championships, so we had a great run here at Waverly-Shell Rock. I've been doing this for a long time, been doing this for 20 years, and 12 here at Waverly. It's one of the few times that it was looked at as a possible good time, not that there's ever a good time to get out, but this was one of them," Caldwell told KWWL Tuesday night.

A search for a new wrestling coach is underway.
