Friend remembers fallen deputy

Friends and family of Keokuk Sheriff Deputy Eric Stein, are still trying to figure out why he was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday.

"I'm anxious to know how this all played out, to get the real story, and maybe we'll never get that," said Stein's friend Tom Burger.

Burger and Stein grew up playing baseball together in the town of What Cheer.  Burger says whether it was playing sports, or his time as a deputy, Stein always approached his day the same way.

"He's the type of guy, when's he's going to go do something, he's going to do it 100 percent," Burger said.

The two close friends worked together at one point in Keokuk County, Burger a 911 dispatcher, and Stein, a paramedic.

"I always thought if I had a close family member or myself that was going through a medical condition that needed a paramedic. I would want him to be there," Burger said.

Burger calls Stein a good friend, who was there for him when his mother died and was an usher at his wedding.

"it's just unfortunate that this happened to someone who cared about public safety."
