Volunteer Tuesdays are a big hit for college students

Students at the University of Northern Iowa are spending one afternoon a week giving their time to help others. The Student Leadership Center at UNI along with the Volunteer Center of the Cedar Valley spend every Tuesday volunteering.

Many say this experience is a great way to enhance their college experience. Janae Holtkamp is a college student and a volunteer.

"It's a great time. Today we get to get off of campus, we are outside, the weather is great and it's a lot of fun work actually," said Holtkamp.

The Student Leadership Center at the University of Northern Iowa gives students the opportunity to volunteer by providing "Volunteer Tuesdays."

"It can sometimes be scary if your in a new place. You don't know where to go, but you want to serve or you don't want to go by yourself you can now serve in a group with friends," said Steffoni Smith, UNI graduate assistant.

Every Tuesday these students go to different locations around the Cedar Valley to help out. This day we find them helping around the farm at ASPIRE Therapeutic Riding in Waterloo.

Smith says although volunteering may be scary, it is really beneficial for the college experience

"Its helps students link their classroom learning to the real world and so I encourage all students to get out there and do it. It's fun, you meet new people, build on those experiences and your building on your learning."
