DHS finds no neglect in Hopkinton dog attack

The Iowa Department of Human Services says its investigators have concluded there was no abuse or neglect in the death of 3-year-old Vanessa Husmann.

Husmann was attacked by two rottweilers on March 5. DHS called her death a "tragic accident."

According to a news release sent out by DHS on Monday, in order to make a case for abuse or neglect there needed to be evidence  that a caretaker either caused abuse or failed to take reasonable action to prevent abuse.

On Friday, Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere confirmed that Husmann's death has been ruled an accident and no criminal charges will be filed.

According to authorities, Husmann was in the care of her 18-year-old stepbrother at the time of the attack.

The two dogs belonged to Vanessa's grandparents and the attack happened at their home on Third Street SE in Hopkinton. Vanessa's mother released a statement shortly after the attack saying Vanessa was never left alone with the dogs, and the dogs must have gotten out of their pen somehow, possibly by digging under the fence.

The two dogs involved in the attack were euthanized.
