Alliant Energy: Power can be disconnected tomorrow

Alliant Energy says customers who are behind on their bills and have not made an attempt to set up a payment plan can have their power disconnected after April 1.

Alliant says that as of March 31, nearly 24,872 residential customers are 60 days or more behind on their bills.  This is up from last year when 23,004 residential customers were behind on their bills.

This year's customers owe Alliant Energy more than $6.8 million dollars with the average bill being $275.

"We understand our customers have a number of demands placed on them in the current economic environment," said Tim Heinrich, director of customer support services, in a written statement. "We will work out payment arrangements for our customers on a case-by-case basis."

You can call a customer service representative 24-hours a day at 1-800-ALLIANT to discuss payment options.

"In addition to the payment options we offer, we can also help our customers get in touch with their community action agencies which distribute energy assistance dollars," said Heinrich.

Qualified customers can apply for LIHEAP funds until April 30, 2011. For more information on contact your local community action agency or visit and click on "Bureau of Energy Assistance."
