Diet and exercise the best strategy even for obese older adults

One in five adults over age 65 is obese, and that number is only expected to grow. But treating obesity in elderly adults has been tricky. Some experts worry weight loss will worsen symptoms of aging.

Now a new study clears things up.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis studied nearly one hundred obese, elderly adults.

They divided them into four groups: diet alone, exercise alone, diet and exercise, and a control group.

They found those who combined diet and exercise improved their strength, balance, gait and how much oxygen they breathed better than any of the other groups.

They also saw less decline in their bone density and lean body mass.
