Science explains the real pain of a broken heart

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

There's a reason break-ups are painful.

New research from the University of Michigan finds brain regions that respond to physical pain overlap those that are activated when a person is rejected by others.

The study included 40 people who'd just gone through a bad break-up with a romantic partner.

Functional MRI brain scans revealed such emotional stress really can lead to physical pain.

Researchers hope this might someday lead to new ways of treating people who are very sensitive to rejection and loss.
