Life lessons from a hometown hero

High school students at Don Bosco in Gilbertville reported to the gym for seventh period Tuesday afternoon.  They filled the bleachers to hear a life lesson taught by a hometown hero.   Sgt. Ian Ralston from Waterloo was injured when shrapnel lodged in his spinal cord after an IED exploded in Iraq last May.

The school presented him with a check for more than $1,000 to help with medical expenses. The class also showed a video production thanking Ian for his service.

"I'm more than happy to talk to people about what I've been through if I can, and any questions about service and my disability.  I'm happy to talk to anyone and inform anyone that I can." said Ralston.

Ralston graduated from Waterloo West High School in 2004.
