Maple Fest is a sweet success

Eastern Iowans are tapping into a sweet natural resource.

Seven hundred people enjoyed an outdoor breakfast Sunday near Castalia in Winneshiek County. For more than 20 years, the Green family has hosted Maple Fest in honor of syrup season.

Green's Sugar Bush has been in operation since the 1850's. The camp is tapped each spring when the snow starts to melt. A hole is bored in the maple trees to release sap which is 97% water. It takes 40 gallons of sap for one gallon of syrup.

The annual Maple Fest includes homemade breakfast, wagon and pony rides, and lots of maple syrup. The camp is located five miles northeast of Castalia, or three miles south of Frankville. The event continues Sunday, April 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
