WATERLOO (KWWL) An eight-year-old eastern Iowa girl prefers to spend her birthday giving rather than receiving.
This year, Lily Duncan hosted a bowling party in Waterloo for her birthday. As with most children's birthday parties, the guests brought gifts. But the gifts aren't for Lily.
"A whole bunch of people are gathering up and bringing toys for kids in the hospital," said Lily Duncan.
For the third birthday in a row, Lily is giving her birthday presents to children in the hospital.
"Because when I was in kindergarten I had surgery, and I was in the hospital so I know how those kids feel, so I really want them to enjoy it," said Lily Duncan.
Lily's right foot is about three sizes larger than her left, which is actually a huge improvement.
"When she was born, her right foot from heel to toe was almost as long as her leg," said Mom Michelle Duncan.
Michelle Duncan said the large foot was a fluke, and they had no idea before Lily was born.
She spent time at the Shriners Hospital and then in kindergarten she had surgery at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
She's missing three toes but can now wear shoes. It was that hospital experience that inspired Lily to giveaway her birthday presents.
"When she had her birthday she said I'm not going to keep these presents. I'm giving my presents to kids in the hospital. We were pretty impressed, and when she turned seven she did the same thing and this year brought it up again, so I said okay," said Michelle Duncan.
Even when people bring two gifts, one to donate and one for Lily, she still gives both presents to other children.
Lily said some of her friends think she's crazy to give away her presents, but she said others need them more than she does.
