Funding issues may cancel Trek Fest

RIVERSIDE (KWWL) -- After 26 years, funding issues may force the cancellation of Trek Fest XXVII.

Carol Riggan, vice president of the Riverside Area Community Club, says the group needs $10,000 by April 21, or the event will be cancelled.

Riggan says flooding over the past couple of years forced the cancellation of some of their fundraising events, which means they don't have enough money to get this year's event off the ground.

Riggan says they went before the Riverside City Council to ask for funding, but the request failed after no one seconded the motion by council member Ralph Schnoebelen to give the group funding.

The group hopes that some donors will come through to support the event so they won't have to cancel.

Riggan also pointed out that while Trek Fest is their major fundraiser for the year, smaller groups also use the event as their major source of fundraising.

A call to Riverside Mayor Brian McDole has not been returned.

Riverside is the future birthplace of Capt. James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise.

Trek Fest XXVII is scheduled for June 24-25.
