Grants available to enhance trails

MARION (KWWL) -- Communities or trail groups wishing to enhance and improve their local recreational trails can now apply for the Iowa's Living Roadways Trails Visioning Program for 2011.  Trees Forever is accepting applications for this program now through April 22.

Participation in the program is an opportunity for trail groups and communities to receive professional landscape planning and design assistance for their local trail projects.  Through a series of planning meetings, a local volunteer committee works with a Trees Forever facilitator and a professional landscape designer to identify potential landscaping and improvement projects for the trail system.

Projects that may be considered include such issues as trail head enhancements, protection of natural areas along trails, interpretive or directional signage, user safety and comfort, visual aesthetics, and stormwater management.

Any group who is invested in the condition and use of a trail may be the lead group for an application (i.e. Friends of the Trail, Park Board, local tree committee, service groups, etc.). Preference will be given to steering committees that represent a rich cross-section of trail user groups.

To apply for the Trails Visioning program, download an application form here or call 800-369-1269 (ext.15) for more information.
